Environmental Awareness

Driving and the Environment

Every vehicle on the road has an impact on the environment. Fuel use, exhaust emissions, noise and tyre wear all contribute to air pollution, climate change and damage to local areas.

As a Driver You Can Help By

  • Driving more efficiently.
  • Maintaining your vehicle properly.
  • Planning journeys carefully.
  • Choosing greener travel options when possible.
Key Principle

Small changes in how you drive and look after your vehicle can make a big difference to the environment.

What it means

Driving in a way that uses less fuel and produces less pollution — sometimes called eco-driving or green driving.

Why it matters

Smooth, fuel-efficient driving cuts running costs, reduces emissions, and is gentler on your car. It's also tested in the theory exam.

Common mistakes

  • Harsh acceleration and late, heavy braking.
  • Leaving the engine running (idling) while parked.
  • Driving with under-inflated tyres or a roof rack you don't need.
  • Carrying unnecessary weight in the boot.

Exam tips

  • Accelerate gently and change up early — around 2,000 rpm in a diesel, 2,500 rpm in a petrol.
  • Read the road ahead so you can ease off rather than brake.
  • Switch the engine off if you'll be stopped for more than a minute or two.
  • Plan your journey to avoid peak traffic and combine errands into one trip.
  • Remove roof racks and boxes when not in use — they increase drag and fuel use.

Real driving examples

  • Approaching a red light: lift off early and coast in gear instead of staying on the accelerator and braking late.
  • Stuck in a long queue at roadworks — turn the engine off until traffic moves.

Key facts to memorise

  • Change up around 2,000 rpm (diesel) / 2,500 rpm (petrol).
  • Switch the engine off if stopped for more than ~1 minute.
  • Correctly inflated tyres improve fuel economy and grip.
